Winning doesn't always mean your learning

Phoenix came up against a very well organized and physically strong Tigers team on Saturday. In the end we were over-whelmed by Whitley Bay who were physically taller and stronger. That said, for the first quarter of the game it was very even, with Ruby, Daisy and Jess probably having the best of the midfield battle. Despite a couple of corners, we were unable to force any clear chances, as Whitley Bay made it very difficult to penetrate. Part of this was due to the Tigers playing a rigid 3-3 formation. Basically, their three defenders literally never ventured past the half way line, even for their attacking corners. This meant it was extremely difficult to find space in the attacking half or have opportunities to counter attack. Half-way through the first half, Tigers scored two in quick succession. From this point, as we tried to get back into the game, Tigers picked us off time and again on the counter attack, but fortunately Ruby made a few good saves to keep the half time score at 2-0. The second half was tough going for the girls, however, they kept going and going, but again we found it very difficult to break down their three man defence. Ruby was excellent in goal again to keep the score down to six … shot stopping, kicking, starting position all excellent.

Reflections on the match would be:
Whitley Bay were physically stronger … not much the girls can do about that!
Whitley Bay played an interesting 3-3 formation, where the defenders remained in their own half. Personally, we will continue to coach and encourage the girls to express themselves when they play. This means driving into space, even if we are playing in defence, making over-lapping runs if we have over-loads, whilst educating the girls on positional rotation so they adjust position to cover a team mate who has moved forward. This may mean we lose games at this age, but the long-term development objectives remain the focus
The morale and the camaraderie of the girls gets better by the week, it’s great to see the smiles and some of their banter (Jess’ bacon sarnie tin-foil). I look forward to the spring when they can get together in a non-football environment
