The boys were back in action tonight away to a Wallsend Greens team and facing three of their former players. After the recent bad weather the pitch was surprisingly dry but the playing surface looked good as the teams took to the pitch. Pont welcomed back Jacob and Zach into the squad but were without the absent Charlie & injured Andy.
Pont started the game brightly against a subdued Wallsend side and played much the better football in the opening 15 minutes when the boys could, and maybe should have scored once, if not twice. Scoring goals has been one of our problems this season, and again tonight this eluded us. That said, some of the approach play was excellent as the two teams battled it out with Pont playing a slick pass & move game and Wallsend relying heaviliy on the pace of their striker.
This proved decisive when after 20 minutes a strong throughball allowed their striker to power home and drive home their first. 1-0. Pont responded well though, and worked very hard for each other as Wallsend enjoyed their best spell of the game. With the half almost up Pont would be happy to come in at 1-0 down but sadly conceded a 2nd, when after a goalmouth scramble, Wallsend managed to smash the ball home.
2-0 Half time
2nd half underway and Pont came out fighting and dominated most of the play in the half.
The defence stood firm against Wallsend's powerful approach play, and with the midfield working the ball around the pitch well it was an excellent performance from the lads, one which made a nonsense of their lowly league position.
In a good and entertaining half Pont were left very dissapointed after a blatant penalty was denied and a couple of very dubious offside flags denied the Pont lads.
Typical as it has been and Wallsend clinched the win with their 3rd with 5 minutes to go, although great credit has to go to Pont for their continued positive approach and desire to play their best football on the floor. Full time 0-3.
With only 2 home games to go the boys are running our if games as they search the elusive first win, but after performances like tonight, the future will be a lot brighter for this excellent bunch of lads, and on another day, and with a few decisions going their way they might have had something more tonight as they certainly did not deserve to lose the game by 3 goals.
Well done to Wallsend, Martin & Gary whose side have come a long way since the games when the teams first met some 3 years ago.
M.O.M. (again) Dan Coathup - Dominating play from the middle with some excellent play, coupled with his desire, again put in another fantastic performance and would have buried the penalty if the Ref had seen the foul!!
